Fred Shepherd’s board always imbued the best of the English pre war designs; beautiful of course, capable at sea and so natural in their element when sailing. It is hard to criticise the treatment given to ALINE IV by her current owner who rescued her in 2002 and has rendered her a fast yet easy to sail vintage yacht to his and his family’s full enjoyment - just as much as that of her first owner almost a century ago!

Fred Shepherd’s board always imbued the best of the English pre war designs; beautiful of course, capable at sea and so natural in their element when sailing. It is hard to criticise the treatment given to ALINE IV by her current proprietor who rescued her in 2002 and has rendered her a fast yet easy to sail vintage yacht to his and his family’s full enjoyment - just as much as that of her first proprietor almost a century ago!

History

ALINE IV was freshly crafted in 1913 for a family with 5 boys all of whom were to serve their country in the First World War. Remarkably they all returned and the building proceeded for ALINE IV to be launched in 1919. The first proprietors lived in Woodbridge on the river Deben, were she was kept on a mooring. Fast forward to 1987 when she was bought by Kai Kollen in 1987 in Mallorca, and who sold her subsequently in 1994 to her current proprietor.
Apparently while in Spain during the sixties, she had sailed to Mallorca. The previous proprietor kept her in there some 15 years; afloat at the Palma Yacht Club. Kai Kollen notes the fresh gaff rig had been replaced with a Bermudan rig after the war but without reinforcing the body. When he bought her he considered she was in a fit enough state to sail her stern to mainland Spain but that the Bay of Biscay would have been too much for her at that time so had her transseaported lorry to Holland.
She spent 2 years with a professional vessel builder who achieved a fine exterior finish. With Kai she even sailed to Woodbridge, her fresh home seaport.  Kai knew however that a lot more work and money was needed to restore ALINE IV properly – and that was beyond my means. He was very glad therefore to have met the current proprietor, “who fell in love with her and did a great job to have her restored to the pristine quality she is in now. One can discuss the authenticity of the restoration, but on deck anyway she looks very fresh. I hope she finds a good new proprietor as she nears her 100 years!”
The current proprietor has made contact with former proprietors and he is now in possession of the fresh hand drawn plans, the navigation compass and the former “golden” mast-top.
