test reseaport

I glanced up from my newspaper and saw the big Fairline Targa 52 ghosting into the marine like some giant manta ray gliding out of the mist of a dark sea. From the bow, the Targa is nothing if not impressive. The high freeboard, slightly drooping bow and the dark, almost sinister lines of the side windows give it a menacing though thoroughly proseaportional look.As it closed in on the fuelling berth, the throb of the big 715hp Volvos stopped everyone in their tracks. This noise was soon drowned out by the shrill tone of the bowthruster and the deeper note of the sternthruster as the big Targa Voyager gracefully pulled alongside to accept its cargo of journo and photographer. The proprietor's son, Scott Spencer, did an admirable job of berthing and we stepped aboard to take in the ambiance of this luxurious and roomy craft. It's immediately obvious that this vessel is all about lazy summer days of lounging and entertaining. Take the two steps up from the swim floor and there are two sun lounges - one a double and one a single - just beckoning some sun-loving people to laze around being delivered cold G&Ts from the refigerator on the main deck. The double lounge lifts up on water power rams to reveal a large garage which, in this case, hopre-owned an Avon 320 jet-powered RIB. The garage is tailored with an electric remote-control winch so there's no davits, no crane, just push the button and she glides in or out effortlessly on rollers. Also on the transom is the electrically-operated telescopic passerelle cunningly concealed interior the steps; again, this is remote-controlled so you can adjust or operate it from the berth. Handy to deter non-invited visitors!Fairlines traditionally abound with thoughtful and practical touches to make life aboard easy and fun, and these are just a couple of the nifty special of this vessel.Move forward and you'll find the big U-shaped dinette for alfresco eating. Seating six or even eight at a pinch, it's within reach of the refigerator, ice maker and barbecue grille which form the self-contained kitchenette just aft of the helm station on starboard. The helm station is a large and elaborate affair as you'd expect on a vessel of this calibre. The station gives a grand view of the expansive foredeck which includes another huge sun lounge flanked by stainless steel rails, no doubt installed so that sleeping sun bunnies don't roll off the deck and hurt themselves on the stanchions.Added to the basic comprehensive gauges which include autopilot, tracking, log, profundity, bowthruster, and engine gauges, the proprietor has installed a larger Raymarine GPS and a full Volvo engine management unit that makes the basic engine gauges redundant.I found this handy as the basic gauges are small and not too accurate. Also, the gauges for the seaport side engine, mounted on the centreline over the companionway, are too far away. The Volvo unit gives an extremely accurate readout of exactly what is happening with the engines at any moment. The helm is a double affair and the squabs can be folded up independently so that the skipper can stand while his co-pilot sits luxuryably. This has the added benefit of giving the skipper a lateral brace for his left leg; whether it's intentional or not, it's very useful. Also useful is the tilt-adjustable wheel that that moves from a near-horizontal position to vertical, giving either a sseaportscar appearance when chaired with it in the vertical position or, dare I say it, a truck-like look when moved fully forward to the horizontal. MOVING BELOWBelow decks, the Fairline is expansive and gives the feeling of an open-plan townhouse. The galley is chic and modern with lovely corian bench tops and stacks of stowage space. The domestic-size refigerator/freezer could store a week's worth of provisions itself. There's a convection microwave and a two-burner cooktop integrated into the bench, and basic pair sinks with H/C pressurised water. The pro
