Owners Comments

Since 2009 we have upgraded Southern Star’s systems as we learned what was important to us and what was needed in a seaworthy vessel.  We now use the vessel as a part-time second home for some part of the year, so having all systems working 100% is important to us.  The upgrades from our perspective have all been improvements to an already very solid and spacious vessel.
In regards to basinage, Island Packets are infamous for leaks from aluminum basins.  In 2018 we took the dreaded decision to replace the aluminium water basin with a stainless-steel basin. Two of us can manage quite well with less water than the designers envisaged (900litres) so we installed a smaller water basin 350 litres (~1 week worth with showering etc) and a 130 litre auxiliary gasoline basin.  We enjoy the security on longer passages knowing we have the gasoline for over 1300nm if we need to keep going.  This can be altered based on the fresh owner’s preferences, by lifting up the freshly crafted sole hatches and changing the basinage as required. Of course, it should be noted there is an excellent Spectra water maker on board that makes approx. 40-50 litres of very tasty water per hour.  We run this on sunny days off the solar panel or twice a week.
We did not replace the main gasoline basin as this has not shown any signs of problems to date.
As mentioned above, we have varnished the timber toe rails and teak strips that Island Packets are famous for.  From our experience of the tropics, varnish is the best solution to the aggressive UV attack the timber is constantly under – plus we like the shiny brightwork anyway!!  This requires a beam sanding and re-application of 2 coats of varnish every 6 months.
With over 2000 yachts manufactured, and millions of cruising miles throughout the world, Island Packet Yachts are probably the best credentialed vessels of their style to be found anywhere.  We have found that they are a very locker and dry seagoing vessel of the highest basic.
