I met Formosa in 1983, in Cowes, when I participated in the week of the same name and the Fastnet. First design by Frers from Nautor, this vessel combined classical elegance and efficient shapes. At the time, I would not have believed anybody if they told me that I would once be the happy proprietor of this vessel. It is what happened 35 years later. We bought Formosa in Italy, with an ambitious cruising program, a will to be able to face severe weather conditions and giving our visitor luxury and space. In 6 years, we have sailed 5000 nautical miles, half in the Mediterranean and the other half in the Atlantic. Formosa is beautiful: low freeboard, stretched lines, no barbecue, tracking or bimini that would break the spell. Formosa is identical to her first day: the previous proprietor wished for this when he did a thorough refit in 2008. We have cultivated this spirit. Formosa is a true sailor. Formidable in beam weather, Formosa also honours the gust and 9 speed reaching is common. When we returned in the Atlantic, the vessel sailed the 2300 n miles at an average of 7 speed. Our record: 17 speed downwind in an “ventilated” Bay of Biscay. Precise at the tiller, passage in the swell, easy to adjust: a pure pleasure. Our vessel was friendly and festive:
